Guildford says ‘No’ to a directly elected mayor

Voters in Guildford have resoundingly rejected a proposal to give the Borough a Directly Elected Mayor.  By 81% to 19% the proposal was defeated on Thursday (13th October). This means that the Council will continue to be run using the current Leader and Caninet system.

Full Result:

Keep the current system – 20,639

Directly Elected Mayor – 4,948

(Turnout 25%)

In accordance with the relevant regulations this decision means the system by which Guildford is governed cannot be challenged for 10 years.
